A reminder: The Rutherford County Solid Waste/Advisory Steering Council will meet at 5 p.m. today in the County Commission chamber, on the second floor of the County Courthouse, One Public Square, Murfreesboro. The public is invited to attend.
They will focus on specific options for solid waste – how to handle it and how to manage the process – as the current system approaches capacity.
I have been reading online about the Zero Waste Alliance and their plan that is producing wonderful waste reduction results in Austin, TX. i am wondering whether the SWAC has studied this plan. Information here: https://www.epa.gov/transforming-waste-tool/zero-waste-case-study-austin#content

I have read much of the Solid Waste Report and find the weakness of it is that it does too little to reduce the sources of solid waste. I would like to recommend the following short brochure to the members of the Solid Waste Advisory Committee: http://ecocyclesolutionshub.org/how-to-get-there/community-zero-waste-roadmap/

I’m curious to how much of the waste that is being sent to landfills are items that can be recycled, reused or repurposed? How much plastic, cardboard, paper, metal, aluminum, and glass (all recyclable items) are trashed? How many electronics (that can even be hazardous) are tossed in with trash (that can be recycled at Best Buy, Staples, to name a few). How many items that can be given to Goodwill, the local mission, or posted for free on a buy sell trade site are trashed? We need to focus on our consumption, holding ourselves accountable for our impact on the environment, and how we can lower that consumption. I recommend earth911.org for recycling resources, and a local facebook page, facebook.com/simplifynashville for recycling tips as well as minimalist living tips.

Yes, this is the approach that individuals should take, being responsible for their own garbage. But not everybody is that responsible. Furthermore, even if Rutherford citizens reduce their output, there will be waste coming in from 17 or 18 other counties.
